本書では選択体系機能言語学の枠組みに基づき、諸言語の節音調を類型的に比較対照し、節音調の意味的機能に個別言語による差があるか分析した。声調言語は、語彙の弁別に抑揚を用いるため、節音調の機能が制限される。例えば単純疑問文で節末を上昇調にすることも不可能だ。声調言語の他に、英語のように節音調が語用論的機能を持つ言語と、日本語のように節音調はそこまで多様で複雑な機能を持たない言語の、三区分を提案する。
