証拠性(Evidentiality)とは、発話者が発話する情報をどのようにして取得したのかを表す言語カテゴリーであるが、認知言語学が分析の中心としてきた英語には文法的な証拠性が存在しないため、いまだ議論の余地を残す領域である。本書では、日本語の証拠性「らしい」を例に、その言語変化、物語論を援用した日本語と英語の比較、ミラティビティへの拡張といった多角的な研究を通して、認知言語学の観点から証拠性を解き明かす。
