Whereas the “meta-drama” in Hamlet draws upon a variety of Biblical echoes, with emphasis on the themes of “sin” and “conscience”, as well as “providence”, that in the next three tragedies, which all belong to the new Jacobean age, lays more emphasis on the story of the Passion and Death of Jesus. It may even be said that, taken one by one, they may each be seen as Shakespeare’s Passion Play.
