The issues dealt with in this book are the main issues of life as facing human beings in the course of my eighty years on earth. They are too great for me to deal with in a single book, but I consider them one by one as I have encountered them in my lifetime, at the several stages of my variegated experience first in England and then in Japan. Thus the book may be seen as a kind, but an unusual kind, of autobiography.
