"When we speak of Gospels, we usually think of the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Then in the Epistles we find Paulspeaking of the Gospel he preaches to the Gentiles, referring to the presence of Christ in heaven and in his suffering members on earth. Moreover, behind the "synoptic" Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, we may recognize the prevailing influence of Peter, so as to indicate a hidden Gospel of Peter. Finally, in the first two chapters of Luke, we find the Gospel of the Infancy, of which the sole witness is Mary, whose influence is also to be seen everywhere in the New Testament, as a hidden, feminine aspect of the otherwise masculine Gospel."
