"A Commentary on T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets. If the representative English novelist of the 20th century is Jame Joyce with his "Ulysses" (1922), then the representative English poet has to be T.S. Eliot, not so much with his "Waste Land" (also 1922) as with his mature "Four Quartets", which followed from 1935 to 1942 at first in four separate volumes, named after four places in England and America, "Burnt Norton" (1936), "East Coker" (1940), "Dry Salvages" (1941), and "Little Gidding" (1942).
They were then published together in 1943 under the musical metaphor of a quartet as "Four Quartets", but they are also united under the combined Christian themes of mysticism and meditation, looking from time to eternity as present in "the still point of the turning world".
