Yushima, located in the middle of the Ariake Sea, Japan, is known as "Cat Island."

There are some remote islands called “Cat Island” throughout Japan, but Yushima ranks among the top for ease of travel and the frequency of cat encounters. It’s also designated as part of Unzen-Amakusa National Park, so the scenery is spectacular.

Even the chalk-white lighthouse, a scenic spot, is painted with cats (a public building!). Both the public and private sectors are quite enthusiastic about cat island.
