Lake Missoula 2022, Rob paces on his porch and tries to rationalize being discharged from an NGO in Turkey for behavior that he can't remember. Things under the surface drive him to look off the back ledge and consider rolling down a granite cliff, but Maya intervenes and gets him with a Jungian therapist who persuades him to process his thoughts in an app called the Virtual Couch. As Rob rebuilds his confidence, he hooks up with a family friend who runs a security company. To get in, Rob needs to prove his loyalty, which includes crossing sacred lines and choosing between old friends and future promises. Which gates will his compromises open -- the question transforms him into someone he didn't see.
